News Update no 66, June 19th

Dear All

A few new important items this week and some reminders.

But to start with I am putting out the newsletter earlier today to draw your attention to some announcements from the Red Lion which relate to this weekend. The pub is an important part of the village and it is much more than just a commercial enterprise.  Like all pubs right now it is facing an uncertain future and so it needs as much support as possible. So here are some items of interest for this weekend.

Barbeque at the pub tonight

It’s the big football game of England v Scotland tonight at 7.30pm and the Red Lion have installed a large TV in the garden under the cover of a Marquee, to keep everyone dry if it is still raining. Enjoy the footie outdoors with a super barbeque or alternatively watch it in the bar.

Sunday Father’s Day Lunch at the Red Lion

A great opportunity to get together with the family and enjoy a hearty meal.  Do book as it’s already looking very busy. See the facebook page of the Red Lion..

The Return of the Coffee Morning at the Red Lion

Coffee mornings start again – every Wednesday at 11am.  This has been greatly missed by the dozen or so regular attendees. A warm welcome awaits everyone so do pop along even if you have never been before.

Cabaret at the Red Lion –Save the Date

Dillie has managed to secure the services of the sublime Christine Bovill, who will be performing her Piaf show on July 10th in the courtyard.  See the Red Lion Facebook page or email Dillie for tickets: dilliedarling@gmail.com

Table Tennis Tournament

A table tennis tournament is being organised in the courtyard of the pub – if anyone is interested, please let Dillie know – the suggested date is Sunday 25th July.  They have the outdoor table and the bats, and certainly some balls… dilliedarling@gmail.com.

Seedling swap ’n’ sale at the Pub!

The seedling sale held last Sunday in the pub raised some £50 (that’s 100 plants sold at 50p each). There are still some left over on the table in the courtyard at the back and more will be made available this coming Sunday. So please pop in and buy some. A suggested donation of 50p per seedling will be gratefully received and given to the Stratton Audley Church for its upkeep.

EWR Road Closures

The most important reminder concerns the Stratton Audley Park Road which will be closed all this weekend (19th/20th) from Saturday morning for highway repairs and resurfacing works. This will be from the A4421 junction all the way along the road, past the Godington turn off. Access for residents and deliveries only. The road will be closed from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Monday Night with Mitra’s Persian Food

Mitra tells me she will once again be in the village serving her Persian food on Monday from 5pm. Located in the centre of the village at the junction with Church Street just turn up on the night or order by texting her in advance during Monday on 07444 364789.

Stratton Audley Barn

The coffee shop is now open with indoor seating, so whether it is Brunch or Lunch, Coffee or Cake, Milkshake or Ice Cream, there is something to tempt everyone. Sit in comfort wherever you choose, inside the cafe, under the marquee or in the adjacent green paddock. Indoor and undercover tables are limited, so call in advance to book on 01869 278184. For more information on www.strattonaudleybarn.co.uk   or Facebook Stratton Audley Barn

Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm.

Community Open Meeting

The Annual Open meeting of the Parish will now be held on 4th August at 7.30pm. Please put it in your diary and come if you are in the village that Wednesday evening. This meeting  has not been held for two years and whilst hosted by the Parish Council is an open meeting of the community which means subjects that are not on the Agenda can be raised for discussion in an open forum.

Launton Road Patching Works

The planned closure of Launton Road and Church Street in August for carriageway maintenance patching works has had to be postponed. This is due to a series of planned EWR road closures in the area between now and March 2022, which take precedence over the County Highway network plans. It is regrettable and the Parish Council is seeking to ensure that the work is undertaken at the earliest opportunity in the new 2022 fiscal. In the meantime the road will be maintained and pot holes filled as necessary.

Little Lambs is Back!

The Baby and Toddler Group is back in Stratton Audley Church from Wednesday 9th June, 10am – 11am (Term Time). Max 15 people – please bring your own tea or coffee. Come and meet new families from the local area safely & join in with story reading, music and toys.

Please book in advance by emailing jeniddoncfw@gmail.com or admin@shelswellparishes.info

Nocino Summer Drinks at Stratton Audley Church

Please see details of an intriguing new fun event being organised by David Young on behalf of the church on 3rd July. He has made a great little video which can be accessed by clicking on this link https://spark.adobe.com/video/WpuYGJGx9pcEc

“ Please feel free to join us on Saturday July 3rd in the gardens of Stratton Audley Church for Nocino cocktails. This year we will collect the green walnuts that fall in Stratton Audley and create Nocino liqueur cocktails to be served in a socially distanced and relaxed setting. There will also be non-alcoholic Nocino for people to drizzle over ice cream. See the flyer for details”.

No need to book.

The Shelswell Group of Church Parishes

Home Library Service

Would you like to borrow library books but are unable to visit a library any reason?  The Home Library Service run by Oxfordshire County Council serves some 700 customers throughout the county.

To get involved contact them to discuss the kind of Books, Large Print/Regular Print, DVDs, Audio Books on CD, Music CD or DVD’s, that you like to read or enjoy.  They can then arrange for a library volunteer to deliver these to you in your home.  Volunteers are DBS checked, wear identification badges and provide a helpful and friendly service.  Whenever possible, they try and arrange for the same volunteer to visit you each time.  Your library materials will be delivered and collected every 3 weeks.  The Home Library Service is free of charge, and there is no surcharges for requests or late returns.

To register for this service or for further information call your local library or telephone the Home Library Service on 01865 810259 or email homelibraryservice@oxfordshire.gov.uk.

Collection Point for Disposal of Ink Jet Cartridges

Please continue to pop your ink jet cartridges into the basket in the Glen Close bus shelter.  Please don’t drop larger toner cartridges off as these are not recycled by the RSPB. If you are not sure if your cartridges are suitable for recycling, you can contact Rachel Dewhurst by email at treehouse0@sky.com
