Approved plan for playground

Playground Update – 6 January 2016

Since obtaining the grant from Wren more parents have viewed the proposed plans and everyone seems to like the general design using predominantly wood frames and they approve of the decision to use a local constructor who has proven credentials having built playgrounds at Ardley, Hethe, Steeply Aston, Middle Barton and Somerton.

There were a few specific suggestions which have been looked at as follows:

A couple of parents asked if an in-ground trampoline could be incorporated and suggested it could be funded by retaining the existing swings and possibly not building the shelter.  Their view was that the swings were perfectly acceptable and another piece of equipment would be better than a covered shelter.

A trampoline is certainly a popular item but upon further investigation the cost of installing one is in the region of £5000. It is also difficult to maintain as it requires specialist tools to access the underside where over time weeds and rubbish tend to accumulate, as can be seen at Ardley.

With regard to retaining the existing swings, the ground surface needs replacing in order to meet current safety regulations and so there will be little saving in this area by retaining the old swings. They would also not look in keeping with the rest of the playground.

Whilst a couple of people questioned the need for the shelter, a majority think it is a good idea, not only for sheltering from the odd shower but also as a shaded area to sit under on hot summer days. It was also an important consideration in demonstrating to WREN that the playground was not just for tiny tots but also for older children to have somewhere in the village to sit and chat. It is purposely designed as an open construction and located to the front of the playground with no hiding places!

A further suggestion was put forward by a number of parents for another play unit that is very popular at Ardley and Hethe – that of a basket swing which has a broad age appeal. The cost of such a unit is circa £1600 plus additional wood chip ground cover but this is felt to be an acceptable cost for a versatile piece of equipment.

Trevor Stewart, who is the builder, was asked to come up with a revised design and the following summarises the key points of the latest plan:

  • Add a basket swing and locate where the new Rotator was planned to go;
  • Move the Rotator to the open area to the right at the front of the playground where there is currently a table and seating area which will be surplus to requirement;
  • Remove the Camel Springer altogether (which has seen better days) rather than repositioning it, as there is insufficient room for it now that the Rotator has been repositioned;
  • Move the open-sided shelter closer to the entrance gate;
  • The surface area covered with wood chip is to be increased and new rubber is to be laid around the vintage horse (which will be restored in situ) and also under the shelter plus plastic matting under the rotator and basket swing;
  • The ground works will be scheduled for March and a skip will be located between the BT fibre box and the tree on the public land outside of the wall;
  • Construction and installation will take place in April;
  • Some provision will need to be made for restrictions to parking on the road outside the playground during March and April.

Taking these changes into account and since the original quote last year, the overall cost is now some  £33,000 but thanks to the specific playground reserve fund that has been built up by the Parish Council and the grant of £26,000, we have the available money.  We believe that given the limited space and funds available, that the revised plan meets the majority of expectations and is a great step forward for Stratton Audley. As a result the Parish Council approved the plan at their meeting on 6th January 2016.

A Yale-type key has been found on Mill Road outside ‘Greystones’ house. It was noticed on the morning of the 31st December.

If anyone has lost this key please contact Becky Adams on 277 471.

Happy New Year.

Plans for new playground

As you may know the Parish Council has secured a grant from a landfill company called WREN to renovate the playground. This fund, when added to additional monies built up by the Parish Council over the last few years, mean that we have a fund of £30k to renew the surfaces and replace existing equipment (with the exception of the vintage horse which will be retained and restored).

We believe most parents of children in Stratton Audley are aware and will have seen the plans but for those who have not, please click on the links below. We received some very positive feedback at the Children’s Christmas party in the Red Lion on Sunday and all comments received will be given due consideration.

The selected contractor, Trevor Stewart, uses natural woods and builds the climbing frames himself. As a local man he has built many other playgrounds in the area, most recently at Hethe, but also Blackthorne, Ardley, Somerton, Steeple Aston and Middle Barton.

The grant has been secured as a result of submitting a detailed proposal in July of this year, so any changes will be of a limited nature. We have been looking carefully at the best surface to use and the general consensus is to use wood chip under the play equipment, retain the grass at the forefront of the playground and put down a limited amount of rubber mulch around a few items.

The intention is to carry out groundworks in the spring and complete the works in time for the summer.

If you have any comments please don’t hesitate to reply to contact us.

Kids Xmas Party 13 December

About 25 children attended the Christmas party in the Red Lion on Sunday 13 December.  A great time was had by one and all. Thanks go to Frank and Lesley for providing the red room for free on a busy Sunday afternoon and some food as well for the kids. In between the games some parents were seen disappearing to the bar which kept everyone happy.

DOUBLY GOOD NEWS

Great news. After much hard work put in by the Parish Council we have secured new funding for two projects.

Resilient Community Grant Bid Success

A few months ago the Parish Council put in a bid to the Resilient Community Fund created by Scottish & Southern Energy. The fund was set up to address concerns about severe winter weather with specific reference to increased numbers of power outages for longer periods and also possible flooding and other eventualities.

We are pleased to report that we have been successful in acquiring a grant of £9,500 and have started work on updating the community resilience plan for the village. The money will be spent on items to help in the event of an emergency.

A key purchase is a Defibrillator which will be housed in a cabinet centrally located in the village for easy access. We will also be building a storage facility and external store, acquiring a generator and items like emergency lighting, torches, snow shovels, another grit bin, a pavement grit spreader, first aid equipment, blankets, hot water bottles etc. So the village will be well equipped if not for this winter then 2016.

We are looking for volunteers to come forward for training in the use of the Defibrillator, also emergency awareness training and generally for people who would be interested in helping coordinate emergency plans possibly as street representatives. Please contact Stewart Hopkins on 277 937 or email strattonaudley.parishclerk@gmail.com

Playground Grant Success

The Parish Council is also delighted to announce that it has been successful in its application to WREN for funding to renovate the playground surface and build new play equipment. Together with funding that has been built up over a number of years by the Parish Council, we have some £30,000 to carry out the work. Although there has been talk about a new playground for some years the detailed submission was only prepared and submitted in July of this year, so a success first time around.

The plan is to undertake the work as quickly as possible depending on contractor availability and to ideally complete the work in time for summer.

Consultations with parents and other interested parties are continuing to take place and if you have comments to make please contact in the first instance the Chairman of the Parish Council, John Honsinger on 278 000 or email strattonaudley.parishclerk@gmail.com

Street Cleaning Success

Thanks to everyone who helped make the road sweepers job much easier on Tuesday by moving their cars. Again we only had a few left on the road, this time in Bicester Road. Bosses from Cherwell District Council paid us a visit to witness the impressive scene and we can be regarded as an example to all other villages as an illustration of effective street cleaning. So thanks also to CDC and driver Harry. Well done everyone!
